A Visit With Donn Fendler
The Friends of Brown Memorial Library sponsored a visit by Donn Fendler on July 18, 2012 as part of the Summer Reading Program. This was open to the public and those who attended heard Donn tell about his nine day ordeal in 1939 when he was lost at the base of Mt. Katahdin. The story captured the attention of the nation at the time and Donn was later presented the Army & Navy Legion of Valor's annual medal for outstanding youth hero of 1939 by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. While at the library, Mr. Fendler showed a dvd with vintage footage taken by his uncle the day after he emerged from the woods. This footage was discovered by his brother four or five years ago in a footlocker and transposed to videotape and then to dvd. Donn Fendler kindly gave the 8 minute dvd to Brown Memorial Library. Both before and after his talk, Mr. Fendler signed autographs and spoke with all who wanted to talk with him.
The visit with Donn Fendler was most enjoyable and a fine addition to the Summer Reading Program!
