Cab of steam engine Wreck of 1949
More Photos of the Train Wreck of 1949
In Clinton on October 26, 1949, a mile long diesel freight train, traveling at close to 40 mph, collided with a steam freight waiting on the track for the diesel to pass. The resulting crash threw a boxcar onto the railroad station, knocking it off of its foundation.
Several men were injured in the crash including the engineer of the diesel train, Chester Davis, who leaped from the engine. Remarkably, no one was killed.
The wreck was the result of a switch that had carelessly been thrown into the wrong position placing the diesel train on a collision course with the steam freight.
